“Level 2” test: simulation of the anaerobic digestion in a CST or plug flow reactor
The test includes a full simulation of CSTR anaerobic digestion based on the data in the mail dd 13/07/2012.
A CST reactor is used for the simulation of the anaerobic digestion process. The reactor has a volume of 55 l in total with a weth volume of 40 L. The temperature in the reactor is 38 ± 0.1 °C, if necessairy the temperature can be changed with 0,1°C in the range of 25 until 75 °C. The digestate is mixed with one top entry mixer which turns at a speed of 60 rpm. The propeller speed is adjustable with 1 rpm from 0 until 180 rpm. Also the direction can be changed. A drum gas counter measures continious the gas production. The reactor is fed 3 times a day, 7 days a week. A retention time of 26.5 days will be used. On the photograph below one of the CSTR configuration is shown.

Weekly following parameters on the digestate or produced biogas are analysed:
FOS/TAC-ratio Total Solids pH Gas Composition (CH4, CO2, H2S)
Total Ammonia Nitrogen Volatile Solids EC Volatile Fatty Acids
Total COD Dissolved COD

All measuring results are send weekly to Global Water Engineering to make short term changes possible.
At the end of the process simulation a global, detailled (at minimum 25 pages) report is made containing:
- The experiment set up
- All analytical measuring data, also shown in graph’s to show changes during the test. The results are decleared and evaluated in detail.
- All data related to the gasproduction, are also shown in graph’s and discussed in detail.
- An overall conclusion with the necessairy recommendations.

“Level 1” test
This test has as goal to determine the biogas and methane potential of biomass. The test can be conducted at mesophylic or thermophylic conditions. For the test a known amount of biomass is fed four times to the anaerobic sludge and incubated for one month. The gas production is measured at minimum once a day. Innolab can conduct the test in 0.5, 1.0 and 5.0 L reactors. Each test is done in double, with 2 blanc’s and a reference sample. Its is possible to do 40 tests at a time. On the photograph below one of the incubators is shown. A 5 page report is made containig the analyses results, a photograph of the substrate and a graph with the cumulative gas production. In the conclusion recommendations will be added if necessairy.

“Level 0” test
This test has as goal to determine the biogas and/or methane potential of biomass. The test can be conducted at mesophylic or thermophylic conditions. For the test a known amount of biomass is fed one time tot the anaerobic sludge and incubated until the gas production stops. The gas production is measured at minimum once a day. Innolab can conduct the test in 0.5, 1.0 and 5.0 L reactors. Each test is done in double, with 2 blancs and a reference sample. Its is possible to do 150 tests at the same time.
The produced gas is collected in plastic tubes filled with acidious water (avoids absorption of CO2 in the water) or is measured in the new electronic system.
What is included:
- Dry matter of the substrate
- Organic dry matter of the substrate
- pH of the substrate
- Gas composition (CH4, CO2 and H2S)
- A 2 page report is made containig the analyses results, a photograph of the substrate and a graph with the cumulative gas production. In the conclusion recommendations will be added if necessairy.
